Physical barriers to home access and use can present substantial impediments to independent living. To eliminate these barriers, Self-Reliance works with licensed contractors to plan and construct modifications to privately owned homes. Modifications may include widening of doorways, home access ramps, inaccessible bathroom renovations.

Consumer Success Story
Meet Joseph:
76-year-old gentleman diagnosed with Hemi-paralysis. He uses a manual wheelchair to get around his home.
Joseph was contacted by a nurse, Carolyn, who was in an area visiting residents who are unable to get to medical services. Carolyn noticed the poor condition of the porch at the front door of Joseph’s mobile home. The porch was about to collapse. Out of concern for Joseph’s safety and ability to vacate the home in an emergency, Carolyn contacted the office of the ADA coordinator with the City of Tampa; Raquel, concerning Joseph and getting the porch repaired.
Raquel contacted Self-Reliance, Inc. Arrangements were made to pay for repairs to the porch. The porch was demolished and repaired within a few days of contact.
Because of community action, Joseph can get out of his home and onto the porch with confidence.
